What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique number assigned to each device on a TCP/IP network. Just like your physical home address lets people know where to send your birthday cards, IP addresses identify computers and devices and allow them to communicate with each other.

Internally, IP addresses are stored as numbers. While computers are happy with numbers, humans prefer names. There are two versions of commonly used IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6.

IPv4 has four hexadecimal numbers separated by periods - eg 192.168.0.1
and IPv6 has six hexadecimal numbers separated by colons - eg 2001:0db8:85a3:0000: 0000:8a2e:0370:7334.
There are nearly 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses, and we use nearly all of them. IPv6 addresses are much more numerous. We won't run out of IPv6 addresses until the heat death of the universe.

What is a static IP address?

A static IP address is simply an address that does not change. Once your device has been assigned a static IP address, that number typically remains there until the device is retired or your network architecture changes. Static IP addresses are often used by servers or other important devices.

How to set a static IP address?

To get a static IP address, you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and request it from them. You can then change your regular IP address and set a static IP address in Windows settings. Note that creating a static IP address is an advanced networking function that requires basic knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol.

Static IP addresses are assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Depending on the nature of your service agreement, your ISP may or may not assign you a static IP address. We'll cover your options later, but for now assume a static IP address will add to your ISP contract costs.

Static IP addresses can be IPv4 or IPv6; in this case, the important quality is static. One day, every connected device we own may have a unique static IPv6 address. We haven't. Currently, we usually use static IPv4 addresses as permanent addresses.

What is a dynamic IP address?

As the name suggests, a dynamic IP address may change at any time, sometimes at a moment's notice. Dynamic addresses are assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server as needed.

We use dynamic addresses because IPv4 does not provide enough static IP addresses. So, for example, a hotel might have a static IP address, but each individual device in its room will have a dynamic IP address.

On the Internet, your ISP's DHCP server may assign your home or office a dynamic IP address. On your home or business network, your devices' dynamic IP addresses -- whether they be PCs, smartphones, streaming devices, tablets, or whatever you own -- are likely assigned by your network router. Dynamic IP is the standard used by consumer devices.

There is no perfect IP address solution that works for everyone and for all situations. Sometimes a computer or device is better off with a static IP address; sometimes a dynamic IP address works best.

Disadvantages of static IP

Static IP addresses are not suitable for all situations.
